In-Depth Look at the iRacing McLaren-Honda MP4-30

iRacing McLaren-Honda MP4-30 4

iRacing has released a fascinating video that deep dives into the complex systems of the newly released McLaren-Honda MP4-30.  When the car was released last month, it arrived with all the complicated systems of a modern Formula 1 car…and no user manual.  While some systems, like DRS, are pretty easy to grasp – press a button when the two lights are green – other systems, like the energy recovery system (ERS), are way more complicated than meets the eye.

This is where iRacing’s Vehicle Dynamicist, Chris Lerch, steps in.  Between Chris’s layman’s terms and informative graphics, the video does a great job of decoding the readouts on the MP4-30’s steering wheel.  I’ve been watching F1 for years and didn’t understand the interaction of more ERS harvesting means more rear tire lock, much less that there’s an automatic adaptive mode and a set-it-yourself fixed mode.

No wonder why they talk about how much work it is for the drivers to manage all the systems.  Like patting your head, rubbing your tummy and doing a crosswords puzzle.

Glad iRacing released this video to clear these topics up.
