Assetto Corsa: Oculus Rift Gameplay Video

Filodream has released a gameplay video of him driving on Assetto Corsa with the Oculus Rift Developer Kit VR Headset. The gameplay includes the Tatuus Formla Abarth at Monza and the KTM X-Bow at Imola.

It’s definitely neat to see Kunos implement Rift support early on in the development in this title, as you can see how it can provide an interesting alternative to triple-screen setups. However, one thing I’ve wondered about is in regards to being able to manage your buttons and controls while using it. I’d like to hear from someone who used the headset in the comments about that.

What do you guys think about the Rift? Do you think you’ll get one to use once it is released?

  1. I have tried the Dev Kit, but not on a racing sim. What I experienced with the Oculus made me put on hold my plans for triple screens and a button box. Using a button box would be a interesting endeavor and might take away from some of the immersion trying to find the correct buttons and toggles, unless you really really know your rig so well that you can find everything blindfolded. hold off on buying the 720P Dev version for those that are impatient. The screen door effect and motion blur will drive you crazy, From what I have heard the newer versions have made great progress with these annoyances. But even the incomplete version made me really see the potential for where our hobby is headed. The rift will be a game changer, In it’s HD version.

full disclosure: I lean more heavily on the Sim Driving side, Time trials, Hill Climbs, leisure driving, drifting. Sim racers might have other thoughts, and triples and button boxes might be the way to go in that situation, especially for endurance races.

Summary, Yes i will be getting an Oculus Rift, Day one!

  2. Lost a long comment due to Disqus. Again.

Anyways I said that the Logitech G13 is fantastic to use as a blindfold button box as you know where the buttons are as soon as you lay your hand on it.

And also said that voice commands are going to be bigger when VR arrives for getting info from the pit crew and requesting pit stops etc. And another thing would be the possibility to use a “weapon wheel style” kind of command circle that you can push a button and choose with your head aim. Could be choosing from a dozen commands in a split second once you know where they are located. I.e – ABS Toggle at 12 o clock, refuel 10L at one o clock, change to wet tires at three etc. Press – aim – release. So basically a nod or shake together with a button press.

Been using the dev kit since april 2013 and absolutely love to race with it!

    1. If this had a rotating toggle I would be sold. Want one to adjust brake biased during a lap, a la Michael Schumacher. Would be real nice to have one on my wheel but I’m going to be running the G27 for a bit longer so I’m in search of a rotating toggle that I can easily use while not taking my eyes of the monitor.

      1. You can assign anything (macro, key bind or key sequence) to any and all of the eight directions of the joystick, maybe that would work?

        1. Yea currently I have the up, down buttons on the four button pad on my g27 shifter assigned to brake bias but it just isn’t convienant to reach over and press it multiple times per lap. I feel like the joystick would be a similar experience. It’s still a neat idea though.

          1. Yeah I see your point. I use the “D-pad” on my GT2 to change brake bias as that’s on the wheel. And having that function too far away will just spoil the purpose.

  3. I tried one at the Play Expo last year. I was keen beforehand being a long time Stereoscopic 3D fan, but this cemented my decision. I will be buying one straight away at retail launch or if the current prototype model (Crystal Cove) is launched as a Dev Kit, I think I’d be happy to jump in at that point.

  4. I know this is an old thread but with all the great sight sound and motion in these simulation why on earth does the shifting sound so cheap. This clicking is not what a gear shift sounds like. The other day I was watching an iRacing video and the gear shift sounded exactly like a galvanized 5 gallon bucked filled with rocks being dragged down a set of wooden stairs. Pathetic.
