Codemasters announced today that the next addition to its ‘DiRT’ franchise, DiRT Rally, is now available on Steam Early Access for $34.99 (£24.99).  While this isn’t the first racing title to utilize the Early Access platform – Assetto Corsa probably being the most notable – Codemasters is the largest developer to do so.

The title launches on Early Access with 17 classic and current rally cars on 36 stages from three different locations.  More cars, stages and locations will be added during the year, as outlined by this pretty aggressive timeline.

Codemasters state that they have torn up the previous notes from the DiRT franchise and started over with brand new physics and driving models of each individual car and surface to make the most realistic game yet.

And if you don’t think its very realistic, they want to know.  Hit them up on Twitter, Facebook, Twitch or YouTube.  Certainly is the nice thing about Early Access and social media.  If you want something changed, you can get to the developers ear’s.

No word on the title’s future availability outside of Steam, with Codemasters saying they are only focused on Steam right now, but I can’t imagine such a large franchise only being on one platform forever.

Features

17 CARS OVER 6 NEW AND CLASSIC CLASSES – Including BMW M3 Evo; Audi Quattro S1; Lancia Delta HF Integrale and Subaru Impreza

DIVERSE LOCALES – 36 challenging stages set across Hafren, Wales; Monte Carlo, Monaco and Argolis, Greece

TEAM MANAGEMENT – Hire up to four engineering staff to work on your car between stages

RALLY ASYNC – Daily, weekly and month-long challenges against fellow players from around the world without the need to be online at the same time

RALLY SEASONS – Compete in a succession of events with the aim of gaining promotion to the next rung on the driving ladder

CUSTOM RALLY EVENTS – Take any car on any track and configure and compete in single or multi-stage events against the AI’s times

UPGRADES – Unlock the full potential of your car with meaningful improvements to its handling and performance

TUNING – Tweak your car set-up based on car, track and weather conditions to best suit your racing style

PHYSICS-BASED ASSISTS – DiRT Rally allows players to experience cars in their purest form. It also offers a selection of real world assists similar to those seen in race and road vehicles as traction control and ABS

DAMAGE & REPAIRS – Wear and tear is faithfully recreated with a comprehensive and realistic damage model. Damage can be repaired by hiring Engineers to work in the team’s Service Area between stages but with a finite amount of time available

Wheel FFB is awful. Physics is not real. At all. Try Dirt 3 and you will get just the same with better graphics and effects and looking more real in terms of graphics (like no those toy colors ect.).
Don’t even try to compare this arcade to RBR or sims like iRacing or AC.
P.S. I should say that track design is good and tracks are really narrow – this is the only good “sim” thing in this totaly arcade game

  1. Looks promising but I haven’t played a rally sim in a very long time. But with PCars coming out soon I don’t know that I have an interest in this right now.

  2. I purchased it today for the current price of $32 which seems reasonable for their model one no micro transactions for new content. I saw some info from Codemasters that they are looking at large monthly updates of tracks, cars and/or new features from now until the end of the year and then evaluate if they will do a full release or continue working on it some more. Next month Pikes Peak will be made available from what I heard. If anything it’s a way of supporting the sim community on early access which I’ve enjoyed with AC. I’ll see how GTX 980 SLI handles 4K later tonight.
