RaceRoom Expanding Classic IMSA Content

RaceRoom Nissan 300ZX GTO Ford Mustang IMSA GTO

Yes, calling something a classic that happened back in Darin’s glory days sounds a bit mean-hearted, but a car becomes a classic in the US when it turns 20 years old and calling it kinda-old doesn’t have much pop.

Now that that’s cleared up, lets talk about what’s important, RaceRoom is cooking up more classic IMSA cars.  The IMSA car count started in 2014 with the release of the Audi 90 Quattro GTO, and it appears RaceRoom is planning to give the legendary race car some sparring partners.

Pictured here is the Nissan 300ZX GTO and Ford Mustang IMSA GTO.  The Nissan entered IMSA in 1990 with steel-frame chassis covered in carbon fiber, 800 turbo lag horsepower, and a five speed transmission.  The car would dominate the series until 1995, capturing Daytona 24 Hour, Sebring 12 Hour and even a LeMans 24 Hour victories along the way.

If the Nissan ruled IMSA in the early 90’s, the 550 hp Roush Protofab Ford Mustang IMSA GTO had the mid-80’s covered.  The car won the 1985 championship after winning nine rounds, including the Daytona 24 Hours and Sebring 12 hour in class.  It also went on to win the 1986 Daytona 24 Hours in the GTO class and capture its second championship.

Other than these pictures, nothing else is known about these cars from Sector3.  But between these two, the Audi VLN, Nordschleife and the NSU 1200 TT Cup pictured above, Sector3 is sitting on a bunch of very-close-to-done-looking content.

  1. To be fair, John, the Roush tube-frame cars, in Mustang, Capri, Cougar, and Merkur form, were very successful in both IMSA GTO and SCCA Trans-Am from 1984-1990 or so.

Edit: I think you might be thinking of the front-engined Mustang GTP, perhaps?

      1. No worries. I grew up in those days. 🙂

Kind of a shame they’re mixing and matching other Nissan liveries on the Z. Newman-Sharp had moved on to Oldsmobiles by then, and the other livery was from the Leitzinger GTU 240SXs.

  2. Really looking forward to having something to race with against the Audi GTO. This is long over-due IMHO. Thank you, R3E. Looking forward to this release.

  3. Awesome! Thank you Sector 3! I was going to write and beg for this very upgrade or the addition of Vintage Trans Am with Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen, or Road America to go with it but this is a great start! However if you are taking requests, you could finish out this GTO upgrade with the one missing critical car… Dan Gurney’s 1986 Toyota Celica IMSA GTO so that Scott Pruitt and Billy T Ribbs can have at it again!!! 🙂
