DiRT 4 To Be More Rally Oriented, Back To Roots

In the past few weeks, members of Codemasters staff have dropped tasty tidbits of information about their next iteration of the critically acclaimed DiRT series. The hints also have implied that

On DiRT’s official Facebook page’s Christmas post, they dropped their first major hint:

Dirt 4 Hint

Some more hints have been leaked through on the official Twitters of DiRT and Paul Coleman, Chief Game Designer of the DiRT series.

Dirt4 Hint 2

A week ago, Codemasters released their latest DiRT Blog, showcasing their trip to the Wales Rally GB, as well as some interesting bits of information that could carry on to their next title. One of the pieces I found most interesting was:

“Rally GB reminded me what a fine line each crew treads – the number of cars that came through with bits of bodywork hanging off or missing, and cars that didn’t come through the stage at all due to having crashed earlier in the day; these guys are really pushing to the limit to go as fast as possible, and sometimes it can all go horribly wrong. Dealing with the consequences of a crash is something games have strayed away from in recent years and I think players could get a taste for having to limp through the rest of a stage, rather than just rewinding or hitting restart.”

It sounds like they are trying to bring DiRT back to its roots, namely the Colin McRae Rally series, instead of relying on the Monster induced adrenaline rush of the previous titles. What do you think about DiRT 4 potentially coming out this year, with a larger focus on Rally Racing? I feel DiRT 3 was on the right track, but the rally stages were just too short compared to the other content. Will Codemasters be able to make a true rally experience?

The real question is, have they tried playing Richard Burns Rally? In other words, will the physics and crashes be as real as that game? Yeah I know it’s an old game, but still, it’s one of the best rally sim games out there!

    1. Fully agree there! RBR has taught me to be scared out of my mind while flying past trees and ditches, and actually I feel has made me a better road racer in turn!

  2. Treading the fine line between reality and playability is where they should be heading. CM2 was the last time they achieved that. I still wish we could have long stages, like Rally Championship 2000. Now there’s an idea for real wanted DLC, Add on full length stages, I’d buy that and I’m sure rally fans would as well.
