Andy Tudor of Slightly Mad Studios Interviewed

Andy Tudor Interview

Connected Digital World is a cool website that features all kinds of video game news, including stuff on the racing front. Andrew Edney from CDW was able to take a look at Project CARS and interview Andy Tudor on site at Brands Hatch in the UK.

Andy Tudor is the Creative Director of Slightly Mad Studios. SMS has a racing game pedigree most companies could only dream of, featuring world-class franchises such as SimBin’s GTR, Need for Speed, and Test Drive. Slightly Mad Studios has been working on Project CARS since around 2012, and has been seriously forming it into one of the top racing titles to look out for this year!

This interview, clocking in at around 14 minutes, definitely is worth a watch! I find it interesting how Andy talks about how he feels Slightly Mad has nailed the experience of being in the car. I am inclined to agree, especially in terms of the wide variety of in-car views and how they can be custom-tailored. PCARS will also feature a top-notch graphics engine, looking to set a benchmark for visual fidelity in a racing title.

However, all the eye candy in the world can be rendered useless if the physics are subpar (Ironically, SMS’ previous title had faced that issue). When Project CARS was first announced, people were worried that it would have the same physics as Need For Speed Shift’s “floaty” feeling. Well I can speak from experience that the physics in the game is quite solid! It’s a major step forward, and I feel that it is one of the better physics currently out there. Sure, some cars have unfinished physics at the moment, but SMS is making some great progress over time.

Another point made in the interview is the importance of dynamic weather and time of day. You can go back in time, and race in a fairly accurate depiction of that point in time. Weather can also make for a key factor in races, where you may have to decide whether to stay on slicks or switch to wet tires. Night racing can provide for another challenge, depending on the circuit. Some courses have so much lighting, it will almost be no different from day racing. However other courses like the Nurburgring will be fearsome in unlit darkness!

I would like to thank Connected Digital World for sharing this interview with the community! What are your thoughts on the interview with Any Tudor? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Shame he didn’t get the chance to ask him about the lack of support for the G27, its not as though its a popular gaming wheel or anything. Can be as pretty as you like, but its broken from the off without provision for a wider range of hardware support 🙁

    1. You can use the G27 on PC. I have contacted Logitech and they said they have offered their wheel codings to PSN but they have not had any response. One can only assume they cut a deal with Thrustmaster only access.

      1. Logitech posted on their twitter feed recently that they wouldn’t be on the PS4 due to the G27 not having the security chip needed.

  2. Okay my ONLY question is on driver chat during online racing. Is there going to be online chat? Definitively, yes or no.
