The next title in the GRID series, GRID Autosport, was unveiled today in a very honest blog post from Codemaster’s Ben Walke. After taking GRID 2 in a more arcadie direction from 2008’s Race Driver: Grid, the developers made it clear that they intend to bring GRID Autosport back in line with the original “as a more authentic racing game.” The blog even goes as far as to admitting, “I think it’s fair to say that through listening to you guys and after a substantial amount of reflection, we hadn’t quite achieved everything we set out to do (on GRID 2).” Ouch.
So how is Codemasters going to steer the ship back in the right direction? First, a more authentic handling feel. Codemasters isn’t promising a sim but something more in that direction. Next there will be multiple racing disciplines such as Touring Cars, Open-Wheel and Street Races. Further details about the disciplines will be released later. GRID Autosport will feature 22 locations with combined route list of over 100. The preview video features real world tracks of Hockenheim, Sepang and Yas Marina and Codemasters promises more real world tracks will be coming. A single player Career mode will allow you to climb the ladder up to professional racing driver, including having inter-team battles with your teammate. Career mode is open to whichever discipline you prefer, which is a nice touch. Races will revolve around the paddock allowing you to practice and qualify before the race if you please, another nice touch. Lastly, multiplayer will allow you to team up with your friends to form a club (and have team colors) and race against other clubs. There will also be weekly multiplayer challenges to test your skills against the rest of the world.
So far, GRID Autosport sounds to be steering the series in the right direction. It launches on June 27th on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 (no next gen unfortunatly). Keep a look out here for more information on the title as it becomes available.
