Dirt Rally First Look and Impressions

Presenting my Codemasters Dirt Rally first look and impressions ! As a fan of the Dirt series, I’ve really been looking forward to this.  No, Dirt 2 & 3 aren’t  sims, but they were both a ton of fun to play.

One of the questions I’ve been getting is “will this replace Richard Burns Rally” as the ultimate rally sim. I’d have to say that it has the potential to. This title is a leaning a lot towards being a full simulation and I couldn’t be happier.

Dirt Rally First Look and Impressions

It’s considered a “Steam Early Access” title which means it’s still in development and we’re basically paying them to help beta test it. That seems to be the route most sim racing developers are going these days. Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2, Raceroom, iRacing.. Heck all of them do that.

So far I have run into a pretty major bug and some others have as well. As you can see from th video, or hear, my co-pilot is silent. I tried everything to get him to relay the pacenotes to me and nadda, zilch, zip.. Codemasters is aware of this bug and are looking into it. In the mean time, I’m currently installing it on my main rig to try it with triple monitors and hoping my co-pilot speaks up !!

My other gripe is the weak force feedback so far. Seems others have complained and so it’s on their list of things to work on .

If you’re a rally fan, I would highly recommend getting this to help with the development. It;s only $32 until May 4th  then bumps to $35 and in the long run looks like it will be worth the investment.

Stay tuned to our sim racing channel, or right here at ISRTV.com for more coverage of Dirt Rally. As a huge fan of rally sims, I’ll be all over this one for a while !

If you got Dirt Rally, what do you think so far ?

No offical release date yet i’m afraid , Codies say on their steam page it will likely be in early access until the end of 2015.

  1. It’s actually a lot of fun, looks great and the graphics engine is well optimized. 4K, 4x AA and Ultra settings runs at 60 fps with no drops. Damage is also well done, things happen when you expect them to. I hit a rock with my front right, got a puncture and was losing air. Later in the stage the tire went completely flat and came off so the wheel was just dragging along and spark where flying off it. Handling was affected through each phase as well.

The only bad part so far as I can tell is FFB, unfortunately it’s just not even close currently and makes this almost unplayable for me. I’ve tried a ton of different settings and I can’t get rid of the loose, sloppy feeling. Hopefully they work on that and I think Codies would have something really good on their hands.

I am absolutely in love with the game so far, I am so glad they have went more toward a full sim.

The stage design is great however I feel the notes may need some adjustment of certain corners on certain stages, even though you can adjust how early or late the co-driver calls the notes sometimes he just leaves it to late in some instances.

Something that may sound like a small thing but this is diffenately the best handbrake I have seen in a game, no longer is it just a flick of a button to get the backend around you really have to pul and holld the handbrake to get around harpins it feels so much more realistic, with flicks of the handbrake only being effective to save yourself when understeering.

The force feedback issue does need some attention there is very little feel a netural, Codies recommend using 270 degrees of rotation with 100% saturation and lineraity set to zero and while there is a little more feel at netural, it just feels way to twitchy at that to me, 420 degrees seems to suit me the best at the moment.

    1. Good tips on the FFB, I’ll try both of those out. I agree with you about the notes, I get lost in them sometimes.

  3. Msportdan over on racedepartment posted this to fix the force feedback issues. Needs some in game tweaking to suit but transforms the feedback instantly. Just follow his post below. Worked for me anyway, here it is.

brilliant FFB RBR now can officially move over!!!

  4. Someone in the pCars forum figured out how to use Simvibe with it using a Dirt 2 profile…even better!

  5. What graphics setting where you using? I started DIRT with my iRacing 5980 x 1080 and the game did not detect or allow me to adjust screen resolution.

    1. Got it to work. At least with my Steam interface there is a Xbox controller icon in the upper right. Click on that and I was in windows mode. From there I was able to set the resolution to triple screen size. The Steering/throttle and brake needs calibration that I could not find. The screen detail at triple was not iRacing. However significant progress from first attempt.
