iRacing.com has released a mid-season update to the service, and while most of the updates were minor, the most notable addition is the support of the Brass Monkey Engine, which enables you to use your Android or iOS device as either a Heads Up Display or as a method to control your car.
The HUD and control system use the Brass Monkey app, which is available for free on iOS and Android. The app connects to your computer via your home WiFi network, and actually works pretty well! (Note: The ELAP overlapping I believe is a glitch with hosted sessions and practices)
Touch the steering wheel on the top left corner of the screen to enable the controls. This is a very basic control scheme, and reminds me of mobile racing games. It can be either steered with the left “stick” or by tilting the device. Shifting is controlled by the sim. While I would not recommend it for running an actual race, it is definitely fun to goof off with at least once.
What do you think of the new addition? Do you like using HUD apps on your phone?
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Install brass monkey client on your phone/tablet
2) Launch brass monkey client on your phone/tablet
3) Start the iRacing simulator (not the website)
4) Click the iRacing link on the brass monkey client to connect
5) Click the steering wheel or HUD icon in the upper right hand side to switch between a heads up display and driving controls
6) If you can’t make this work, double check that your phone is on the same wifi network as your computer.

A very cool and useful addition, if not a little behind the competition.
it works surprisingly well as a display. you don’t need to detup anything, it’s just install and play. there is practically no lag which is really nice
