NASCAR Driver Dan Phillippi Tries An Oculus CV1

NASCAR driver Dan Phillippi tries an Oculus CV1 with the very popular online racing simulator, iRacing. Driver of the #39 K&N Pro NASCAR, Dan tried an Oculus CV1 in iRacing recently and released a video to YouTube with his first thoughts on how it is to sim race with the Virtual Reality head set.

In the video, Dan has some interesting things to say about his experiences with the Oculus Rift CV1. One statement he makes struck a chord with me, as I have been saying the same thing since I first received my DK2 nearly two years ago. Dan did not need much time with the CV1 to conclude that VR is the future of sim racing and that his triple screen days are numbered. Baring an unforeseen turn of events, Dan does not see himself returning to triples now that VR has presented him with the best way to train for upcoming races.

He is not a fan of the CV1’s resolution, but even with that against it, Dan prefers the CV1 to HD screens, which is probably how most people that support VR in sim racing feel about their headsets. Having sat in the cockpit of your favourite race car and once you become fully immersed in VR, it is hard to look at a 2D monitor with the same objectivity, especially if the immersion is broken the second you take off your HMD!

Dan Phillippi’s YouTube thoughts regarding his CV1 experiences thus far:

I didn’t know too much about the Oculus Rift before I made this video. There is a mic in the rift and it is actually really good. I still use my other headset. About the graphics, “Oculus Rift” games look better than iRacing. Things might look better in the future when iRacing does more updates.
In this video, I describe my experience on the Oculus Rift for iRacing. There is one thing I forgot to mention in the video. You get very sweaty. This might not be the product you pass around and share with your friends. It can be cleaned, but still… Make sure your AC is on and use a fan. It makes all the difference. When you have sweat dripping into your eyes and you reach your finger in there to wipe it off, you lose your vision completely. You NEED a fan, or deal with it until a caution comes out.
