Cheap Alternative to Laser Scanning? Project Video Scanner Released

Laser scanning has become the go-to method for accurate tracks for sims. However, it is expensive, and fairly inaccessible to the smaller developers. FlyPT is developing a new software called Project Video Scanner, which uses stereo vision movies to create point clouds (similar to laser scanning), at a much lower price point.

As you can see in the videos, it can do a pretty good job of capturing the road and surrounding terrain. I would love to see a comparison of a laser scanned track and one captured via this method, to see how things would work.

Higher end webcams (such as the Logitech C920) are recommended, but the sky’s the limit for fidelity! You can look up examples of recording rigs, and also some in-depth instructions on how to use the software on Project Video Scanner’s official site.

You excited to see more advances in track development methods?

  1. Hi,

Was looking at my statistics and suddenly a big jump….

    Thank’s for showing my project.

This started at the Project Cars forums. About one year ago. We where talking about the prices of laser scanning and I talked about this tech. Since there was nothing similar to this I decided to make it myself.
So here you have a program that was made thinking on the community at Project Cars. The purpose was to make something cheap that anyone anywhere could use to scan and share point clouds.
The idea was to make one rig and send the rig around the world to all the members that could scan interesting roads or tracks…

It’s an amateur program. Expect errors and bugs. It was made on my free time and I’m still correcting and enhancing the code.

This kind of tech works best on narrow roads like rally stages or hill climb. Open wide tracks have no features and we easily loose track of the camera motion and depth map of the stereo movie.

Any question, feedback or problem, just ask I will be glad to answer.
