Slightly Mad Studios has announced that Project CARS will feature content from one of the most challenging races in the world, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Automobile Club de l’Ouest, the organizers of the legendary race, has fostered a partnership with SMS to bring the iconic circuit to the sim.
Project CARS looks to give racers the most authentic Le Mans experience possible, with a solid team of race drivers providing input. Rene Rast and Oli Webb competed in the LMP2 class in this year’s 24H, while former Stig Ben Collins raced in the GTE class. Slightly Mad hopes to translate their experiences into the sim.
Now what good is the race if you don’t have cars to race on? Thankfully, PCARS will have a wide variety of official Le Mans racers to get behind the wheel of:
LMP1
- 2002 Audi R8
- 2011 Audi R18 TDI
- 2014 Audi R18 e-tron Quattro
LMP2
- 2014 Alpine A450
- 2014 Oreca 03
Historic Le Mans Racers
- 1999 BMW V12 LMR Prototype
- 1990 Mercedes-Benz Sauber C9
- 1978 Renault Alpine A442B
To commemorate the Le Mans announcement, Gaming Nation UK will be running a 24-hour charity race using Project CARS’ Le Mans circuit. On 12PM BST this Saturday, you can look forward to them running two races simultaneously and being broadcast on Twitch.tv. For more information on the event, you can check out the official page.
Are you excited to race the 24H of Le Mans when PCARS drops this November? Let us know in the comments below.

Okay now I’m fooking jealous……not in a good way though……I don’t like PCARS :/
Why wouldn’t you like pCars? It’s awesome! =)
As for the R8, I’d really put it in the GTE class, where it belongs, instead of the LMP1. Given that we have a whole slew of GT3 cars – which didn’t compete in this year’s Le Mans, but are up to pretty comparable specs to the GTE / AM cars that did – I think we are fairly well covered all around =).
Physics aren’t very good IMO
And GTE and GT3 cars are entirely different animals
Sorry to hear you don’t like the physics. Can I ask which games you play, so I have an indication of which way you lean?
Afaik GTE = GT2, which is pretty much GT3 with a stricter rule book. The cars in GTE and GT3 perform similarly, so I don’t really see why they would be completely different animals?
Assetto Corsa, GSC, Netkar, used to use GTR2…..etc….
And no….. stricter rule book my ass 😛 GT2/E/LM cars have a lot more downforce than GT3s, better tires (by a lot), about the same engine power (although manufacturer claims say otherwise, liers :P), and are much trickier to drive. Yes they perform similarly (GT3 1-3 seconds a lap slower on most circuits, depending on the weather they may be faster)
BTW I do physics for mods…..and also founded/manage a modding group 😉 (logo is my avatar ATM)
If they have same engine power, but better tyres and more downforce, shouldn’t they be easier to drive, rather than trickier? Weight should be in the same range as GT3, so unless I am missing something..?
As for the whole physics discussion – what bothers you about the pCars physics, then?
Theoretically yes, but they’re not. GT3s are designed to be user friendly, and easy to drive for the rich boys who want to go racing. GT2s are not.
It feels just wrong to me. Fun but wrong. Everything’s a bit floaty and disconnected…..
Have you given – and sought – some feedback on this issue? =) One of the lead devs opened up a thread that has been going since february on the subject of floatiness. Turns out every man has a very different definition of what it means and often it is either a matter of perception due to camera setup or bad ffb calibration. I would encourage you to skim through some of it – it’s in the Physics and AI section of the forum, 1st page below the sticky’s. You might find some pointers there that help you better appreciate the game for what it is.
Personally I don’t find I have any feeling of disconnectedness in any car. Input lag and understeer, sure.. but I play on a tv with noticeable delay (awaiting my Oculus Rift DK2 eagerly) and some cars are just set up to be understeery by default. Not floaty, though. Some cars I can feel less directly connected to due to a lacking feeling of weight in the wheel, but that changes from car to car from week to week, as things are dialed in. The cars that feel good I have a very direct connection with.
Richard, you are wrong about the R8 – you must be thinking about the much newer R8 which is the GT car based on the street car R8. The R8 from 2002 is a petrol based LMP1 car from before the diesel cars. The R8 2002 LMP1 car won Le Mans in 2002. See picture. This car should therefore not be compared with wither GT2, GT3 or GTE cars.
Oh, yes, of course! You are completely right! =). We don’t have that one ingame yet, while we do have the R8 street and R8 LMS Ultra ingame now, so my mistake.
Thank you for the post on this forum. We are very excited for this event and are proud to be working closely with Slightly Mad Studios to get a first play on this Official Le Mans Circuit.
I am excited to get this game. Looks like it will be great. I just wonder which system will be better for multiplayer, PSN is set up already and ready to go. PC… Who knows…
PC will run over Steam, so if you have that, you should be good to go. I haven’t had much of any issues online so far.
But it is the way you can race in a room and talk and stay in the room and start the races in PSN that is so much better than anything STEAM can even dream about doing. I have both and it is not even close.
Sure, consoles revolve around friends primarily for its social aspect. Steam doesn’t incorporate as much of the same mentality. Doesn’t mean what you are after isn’t possible. If you want a “room” as in a social connection with multiple friends simulaneously, all you have to do is start a chat with one and invite others into it. You can write to all involved to your heart’s content or you can call them all up at the same time. If you want a “room” to race and talk in within the game, then good news! The multiplayer in pCars is done through lobbies and a lobby browser. You can create a lobby yourself, if you like, and invite people into it. Usually with Steam if you have a chat going and you join a multiplayer game, it automatically says so in the chat and links people directly to it, so all they have to do is click the link to go right into the same lobby as you. I haven’t tried this with pCars, but it would surprise me if it wasn’t – or won’t be for release – in place.
