Throwback Thursdays: Mario Andretti Racing

In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we’re taking a look at Mario Andretti Racing, released for the Sega Genesis in 1994.

Mario Andretti Racing was one of the first racing titles released under the EA Sports banner, and was developed by Stormfront Studios. The game was a pioneer in the racing industry, due to the fact that three vastly different racing disciplines, Sprint Cars, Stock Cars, and Indy Cars, were simulated with accurate physics. Fifteen circuits (5 for each style of racing) were in the game, with ten of them modeled after real world locations. Mario Andretti played a major role in developing the AI, to provide a realistic experience when you can race with up to 9 opponents.

The game also has a small legacy, with developers Scott Orr and Richard Hilleman branching out to start developing EA’s NASCAR games. In 1996, the followup to Mario Andretti Racing, simply titled Andretti Racing, was released for the Playstation and Sega Saturn, to notably less praise. In 1997, the PC version of Andretti Racing was released, improving on the Playstation version, and creating a slightly better experience.

Do you have any memories of racing any of the Andretti Racing titles? Let us know!

Author’s Note: I grew up a fan of Andretti Racing for the PC. However I have never had success getting it to run on Windows 7. I’m curious if anyone in the community has gotten it to work?

  2. Yes!!! You have acknowledged another great title! I have this title for the Genesis and PC. This game gave me countless hours of fun with the three different racing disciplines. It certainly has earned a spot in my ‘Hall of Games’.
