Project CARS 2 Announced

ProjectCARS2-Teaser-Banner

Yes you are reading this correctly.  Even though Slightly Mad Studios JUST released Project CARS a mere six weeks ago, the studio has announced that Project CARS 2 is coming and open for crowd funding.

As with the original, Project CARS 2 will be funded and developed through the World of Mass Development.  There are five membership tiers, with the entry tier being a bit steeper than last time, demanding a £50 British pound ($80 USD) investment for the Bronze package.  The top of the line tier is Diamond, a mere £10,000 ($15,830 USD) investment.  The tiers can be seen here and you can donate here.

Unlike the original title, there will be no profit sharing from Project CARS 2, per the ruling from the UK’s Financial Services Authority that froze the crowd sourcing on Project CARS.  This time, the crowd sourcing will be in a more traditional manner, with your investment giving you voting rights, behind the scenes access and swag.  This brings the campaign more inline with other crowd sourcing platforms like Kickstarter, Indiegogo and GoFundMe.

Here’s the PR info:

Building upon the huge success of Project CARS being one of the highest-rated and fastest-selling racing games of this generation, Project CARS 2 continues to expand and dominate with…
  • THE LARGEST TRACK ROSTER EVER – 50 unique locations and 200+ courses including ‘loose surface racing’ on dirt, gravel, mud, and snow. All will have dynamic time of day and weather allowing you to play anytime, anywhere
  • THE WIDEST VARIETY OF MOTORSPORTS with 8 different disciplines now including Rallycross, Hillclimbs, and Touge. 200+ cars from over 40 different vehicle classes including never-before-seen Concepts and Banned Race Cars
  • CO-OP CAREER – Play as the Teammate Driver, Spotter, Driver Swap, or Co-Pilot. More choices, more opportunities, more strategy, greater risks and greater rewards
  • SEAMLESSLY CONNECTED – Socialize and compete via Online Track Days, have players from around the world take the place of AI-controlled drivers in your solo play, and get news updates on the Driver Network around you
  • PRO ESPORTS RACING – Skill & Behavioural-based matchmaking, create your own Online Racing Seasons, and Live Broadcast and Spectator functionality
  • YOUR HOME FOR RACING – Your own personal, customisable Test Track to tune and test your cars. Invite others to showcase your passion for racing and learn race craft and engineering with the Project CARS Academy

Dirt’s exciting.  So is driver swaps.  More cars and more tracks is always good.

What I’m really curious to see is how the community is going to respond to the news.  Clearly, Project CARS has not only has a HUGE following but a committed one.  Project CARS was not just a money investment (sometimes significant) but a big time investment.  How are they to feel?

Slightly Mad has already come out and said that improvements are not stopping on Project CARS and that they will be done simultaneously to development on Project CARS 2.

While I do believe that they will continue to improve Project CARS, clearly, some resources are going to be shifted to Project CARS 2.

It’s certainly an interesting move by Slightly Mad to announce the next best thing right after the next best thing was released.  Would love to hear the communities thoughts on it.

  1. Well, hopefully it has fewer post-launch bugs than the first one. Have all the delays you could ask for so long as it’s as free from problems as possible.

  2. I’m thinking………no.

But, I do like the idea of rallycross and “loose surface” racing. But it had damn well better offer vastly improved FFB than the current version of the sim offers.

  3. ImageArtSigns .

Personally, it does not bother me one bit…I donated into the development of pCARS 1 from the start and I am satisfied with the result and I get the enjoyment I need, it’s not perfect but hopefully pCARS 2 will be even better…I would like to see some ‘RALLY’ and ‘NASCAR’ to fill in some of the gap.

I don’t see an issue either. Other games devs do the same, maybe not via crowd source funding but look at the CoD franchise, 1 team is working on the one to be released in Nov this year and another already on the one for next year. SMS are simply going to start work on pCars2, while some of the staff patch and do DLC for pCars1. With the money pCars1 is generating, they can reinvest in pCars2 and the more from crowd sourced funding, even better.

  4. Broken pcars1 add some cars and tracks and call it pcars2…omg, where do I sign-up at ?…..morons..wait, is this EA ?

  5. Heck no, I won’t chase this! Count me out! I was actually forcing myself to like pCars1 and all it’s flaws. pCars1 was actually causing me to split my time between iRacing, AC and R3e. Since I read about pCars2 development, I noticed that I am less enthused about putting up with the bugs in pCars1… that’s right, no longer need to force myself to put up with something that will likely never be fully debugged and get in line for the next cash sucker which will never be completed before pCarsX is announced. Consumers that subsidies crap like this actually send the wrong message to developers that it is OK to pump out trash while they laugh their way to the bank… For me R3e has now moved into top position for solo sim driving / racing, iRacing for human experience and AC for hard simulation experience. I will miss rain, fog, and night for pCars though! NOTE: I would have been willing to spend big bucks if pCars chose the expansion pack route because that helps ensures that you get IMPROVMENTS along the way vs. planned obsolesce! pCars could learn a little from R3E on this one!

    1. There are 40 people working on continued support for pCars1, more than the entire Kunos team for AC! I wouldn’t worry about continued support, it will be years until pCars2 comes out.

    2. R3E was so buggy during 2014, that the steam rating is still only 6 out of 10.

I played AC and R3E for over 250 hours each and pCars (>100 hours) is my favorite in the moment. Tweaking some ffb-settings by pushing up the SoP-Lateral and Differential values even close to the max is changing the ffb-experience significantly with many cars.

In R3E i miss proper tyre physics respectively grip/no grip-ffb, AI balancing is pretty bad with some car/track combination (try DTM 2013 on Laguna Seca or Bathurst for example) and the AI is hitting me at least two, three times during a race, often with offroad consequences just for me. And since last update it´s breaking to early, before it was to fast. No mandatory pitstops in RR-mode, AI is not affected by tyre wear and you can´t change the strength during a championship plus no weather or even other grip conditions isn´t IMHO enough for a so called simulation without any career-mode apart from the two packages.

AC has descent ffb and maybe the best physics, but ffb in curves is boring and the AI-cars are just stupid robots. Only the multiplayer is doing a good job and pCars has still some buzzkilling bugs in this regard. But patch 1,5 is already in final testing Ian Bell wrote yesterday it´s supposed to be awesome (according to him): http://forum.projectcarsgame.com/showthread.php?32565-PC-patch-v1-5&p=1010349&viewfull=1#post1010349

  6. I like the dirt track rally type racing idea, but I am waiting until it goes on sale after it has been for sale for a while. I do like Project Cars, but it does still have some glitches, especially the PS4 version.

  7. Sim Vansevenant

They might have announced it too soon, I admit that. That being said, it’s not like they’re abandoning pCars1, is it?
There are still 40 people working on it.

Please stop raging and give them time. The moment a DLC, physics update or FFB update is released and it’s an improvement, players will praise it again.

I believe pCars2 will probably be released in 2018. Between now and then pCars1 will have been improved considerably.
    Mark my words.

  8. They sold over million copies of pcars. Now don’t you think they should be making pcars2 with their own money ? Can’t you people see this is a scam, are you that blind ?

    1. What does it matter to you what people do with THEIR money? Seeing as you’re doing just that, tell me what to buy in the supermarket tomorrow eh?

    2. They need the money to pay us wmd investors our profits for funding the first silly game. Just like Ian to use OPM to pay debts owed.

  9. I really don´t get this game. Career mode is broken and will remain like this. Multiplayer is very superficial, specially when you have used Iracing. So what is the point. How do you guys play this game?
